ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — An Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s Evin prison earlier this week killed at least 71 people, Iran’s judiciary announced on Sunday, just days after a ceasefire ended a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, according to AFP.

Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir confirmed the casualties, saying, “According to official figures, 71 people were killed in the attack on Evin prison.” The strike occurred on Monday and targeted the heavily fortified prison complex located in the north of the Iranian capital.

The bombing was part of a broader Israeli military campaign launched on June 13 aimed at degrading Iran’s military and nuclear capabilities. The attack on Evin, a notorious detention center known for housing political prisoners and dual nationals, marks one of the deadliest single incidents in the recent round of hostilities.

The announcement follows a fragile ceasefire that brought an end to nearly two weeks of intense cross-border strikes and escalating tensions between the two longtime adversaries.

As of Sunday, Iranian authorities have not provided further details about the identities of the victims or the extent of the damage to the facility. Israel has not publicly commented on this new unveiling.
