ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — President Masoud Barzani on Sunday reiterated his call for resolving political disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the Federal Government of Iraq within the framework of the Iraqi Constitution, during a meeting with a visiting delegation from the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
The delegation, headed by Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, met with President Barzani in Pirmam on Sunday. According to statements released following the meeting, discussions focused on the broader political landscape in Iraq and the ongoing disagreements between Erbil and Baghdad, with particular attention to the salary crisis affecting public employees in the Kurdistan Region.
President Barzani emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional principles, specifically the concepts of partnership, balance, and mutual respect. "The livelihood of citizens in the Kurdistan Region should not be used as leverage in political disagreements between different parties or between the two governments," he stated.
He called for an immediate resolution to delays in the disbursement of salaries and the financial entitlements owed to the Region. The president’s remarks come amid heightened tensions surrounding budget allocations and the perceived politicization of public sector wages.
The talks also touched on the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq. Both sides underscored the need for political coordination and joint efforts to address existing challenges and to strengthen Iraq’s democratic process.
President Barzani's comments reflect a continuing insistence by the Kurdistan Region's leadership on constitutionalism and equitable governance in dealing with Baghdad.
