ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned of a worsening water crisis in Tehran, stating that the situation could force 15 million residents to leave the city. This statement reflects serious concerns about the deteriorating environmental conditions in the area.
In an interview with Asriran, the Iranian President described the situation as dangerous, noting that Tehran is facing a severe water shortage. He mentioned that relocating the capital had been proposed as an emergency solution.
Of Iran's 31 provinces, 20 are currently experiencing a water crisis, with many water sources rapidly drying up.
According to the official IRNA news agency, one of the country's largest water reservoirs is expected to be completely dry within the next four weeks.
On Wednesday, Tehran Governor Mohammad-Sadegh Motamedian informed the Tasnim News Agency that the demand for clean water in Tehran is five times greater than the available supply.
He reported that the four main dams supplying drinking water to Tehran have experienced an 87 percent decrease in capacity, with only the Taleqan Dam remaining in relatively good condition.
The governor also noted that 62 percent of Tehran's drinking water is sourced from groundwater wells.
Earlier, the Tehran Water and Wastewater Company stated that the city had not faced such a dire situation in 100 years, attributing it to the prolonged drought that had occurred over the past five years.
The company warned that water reserves in Tehran's dams have reached their lowest levels, and the crisis is expected to worsen during the summer.
