ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce on Tuesday voiced opposition to a draft law in the Iraqi parliament concerning Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), warning that it could undermine Iraq’s sovereignty and security institutions.

“We oppose any legislation inconsistent with the goals of our bilateral security assistance and partnership, and that runs counter to strengthening Iraq's existing security institutions,” Bruce said during a press briefing.

She stressed that Washington supports “genuine Iraqi sovereignty, not legislation that would turn Iraq into an Iranian satellite state,” adding that the United States has been consistent in its position that “the future of nations should be in the hands of their own people.”

“Our commitment here remains firm,” Bruce concluded.
