ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A vital strategic project in Duhok province, designed to bolster water security and create a new tourism hub by transferring water from the Tigris River to the Duhok Dam, is now in its final stages of completion, according to officials overseeing the initiative.

The project, which involves the construction of a 1,200-meter-long water channel, is a significant infrastructure development for the region.

It is being implemented with a budget of over one billion and 79 million dinars drawn from the special budget of Duhok province.

The channel's route begins in the village of Piromera and extends to the Duhok Dam, providing a crucial new water source for the reservoir.

In a statement to Kurdistan24 correspondent Bewar Hilmi, the project engineer, Saadulla Saeed, detailed the channel's dual purpose.

"This project brings water from the Tigris River to the Duhok Dam, which will be a great support for the dam and will also become a tourism project in the future," Saeed explained.

He confirmed that the extensive works on the 1,200-meter channel are now in their final phase.

Beyond its primary function of ensuring a stable water supply, the channel has been meticulously designed to serve as an attractive tourist destination.

The plan includes developing the area to allow citizens and tourists to visit the channel and enjoy their time in a scenic environment.

To further enhance its appeal, a second phase of the project is planned, which will focus on planting trees and creating green spaces along both sides of the waterway, a move expected to add significant natural beauty to the area.

Hezha Abdulwahid, the Director of Irrigation in Duhok province, emphasized the immense strategic importance of the initiative, placing it within a much larger framework.

Abdulwahid stated that "this channel is part of a larger project to transfer water from the Tigris River to the Duhok Dam, which is 35 kilometers long and will be implemented in three phases."

This highlights the current work as a critical first step in a long-term water management strategy for the province.

The completion of this ambitious project is anticipated to have a significant and positive impact on the water security of Duhok, especially during times when the dam's water level might otherwise decrease.

Simultaneously, the creation of a new, well-designed tourist attraction is expected to lead to the revitalization of the tourism sector in the region, offering new recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors.
