ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Soran Municipality has announced the launch of a campaign to remove animals from the city center, following repeated calls from residents to address the issue.

Bzhar Saeed, acting mayor of Soran, told Kurdistan24 on Sunday that beginning on Monday, municipal teams will seize any large or small animals found roaming the streets or in front of public places. He added that the municipality will also work to identify and hold the owners accountable.

According to Saeed, citizens have long complained that animals wandering in public spaces diminish the city’s appearance and have caused damage to trees along main roads and near the presidency building of Soran University.

The acting mayor explained that seized animals will be kept in shelters, with a daily care fee of 30,000 dinars. Owners will also be fined 50,000 dinars for small animals, while penalties for larger animals will range between 100,000 and 250,000 dinars.

The campaign follows earlier calls from the Soran Environmental Office, which had urged municipal authorities to take action, warning that the presence of animals in the city center was negatively affecting both the environment and urban life.
