Peshmerga Join High-Level Military Meeting in Amman
Kurdistan Region Peshmerga officials join a high-level military meeting in Amman focused on border security, intelligence sharing and regional coordination.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - A high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Region, including the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, Shorsh Ismail, and the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces, Lieutenant General Issa Ozeir, joined a high-level regional military meeting in Amman on Tuesday, to discuss border security, intelligence sharing and coordination in confronting security threats.
Hosted by the Jordanian Armed Forces–Arab Army in the Jordanian capital, the meeting brought together senior military officials from Iraq, Jordan, Syria and the Kurdistan Region, alongside the commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The meeting was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, the commander of CENTCOM, the Chairman of the Jordanian Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chief of Staff of the Syrian Army and Armed Forces, the KRG Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, and the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces.
The gathering focused on strengthening military relations among the participating sides and establishing broader frameworks for joint cooperation and coordination amid rapidly evolving regional developments and security challenges.
Participants discussed several issues of shared concern, foremost among them regional security, border protection and confronting cross-border threats and risks.
They also examined ways to increase coordination, exchange information and expertise, and strengthen joint preparedness and capabilities to respond to current and future security challenges.
The meeting highlighted the role of the Peshmerga Forces and coordination with other military forces in the region in securing borders and confronting cross-border threats.
During the discussions, the Minister of Peshmerga Affairs and the Chief of Staff stressed the importance of unifying efforts and developing frameworks for security and military cooperation and coordination amid the rapidly changing regional situation.
The participants stressed that “the rapid developments in the region require the unification of efforts and strengthening of joint work.”
They also emphasized that “protecting borders and safeguarding the security and sovereignty of states requires continued coordination and communication among military and security institutions in a way that strengthens the ability to confront threats and challenges with competence and effectiveness.”
The participants further stressed “the importance of developing existing military relations, expanding areas of cooperation and coordination, and exchanging expertise and experiences in a way that strengthens defense capabilities and operational readiness and supports the security and stability of the countries of the region.”
Iraq, Jordan, Syria and Kurdistan Region expand coordination
The discussions focused on building integrated efforts to protect border security, confront security risks and preserve the sovereignty and stability of the countries involved.
Iraq’s Defense Ministry spokesperson Yahya Rasool said the meeting was held within the framework of strengthening military relations among the participating sides and consolidating prospects for joint cooperation and coordination.
He said the discussions took place against the backdrop of rapid regional developments and the security challenges facing the region, with the aim of serving security, stability and shared interests.
Rasool said participants discussed mechanisms for enhancing information and experience sharing and strengthening joint readiness and capabilities to deal with security challenges now and in the future.
The participants, led by the Peshmerga leadership, stressed that protecting regional stability requires sustained joint action and expanding security cooperation to achieve the highest levels of readiness to confront current and future challenges.
Iraq, US discuss regional security
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army met with the commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The meeting addressed military cooperation and coordination, as well as the latest security developments and changes in the region.
The sides also discussed ways to strengthen joint efforts in support of regional security and stability.
The meeting in Amman brought together the military leaderships of Iraq, Jordan, Syria and the Kurdistan Region around border security, information sharing and coordinated responses to security threats.
