Saudi Arabia Strongly Condemns Drone Strike on Masrour Barzani's Office, Calls It a Clear Violation of Iraqi Sovereignty
Riyadh's Foreign Ministry issues a forceful condemnation of the attack on the Kurdistan Region and the KRG Prime Minister's office, reaffirming its rejection of all hostile actions targeting state institutions and Iraqi territorial integrity
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong condemnation on Tuesday of the drone strikes that targeted the Kurdistan Region and specifically the office of Kurdistan Region Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, describing the attacks as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Iraq.
In an official statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry condemned in the strongest terms the attacks carried out against the Kurdistan Region and particularly the office of Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Saudi Arabia described the strikes as a clear violation of Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reiterated its categorical rejection of all hostile actions that target individuals or the security of Iraqi state institutions and seek to undermine the country's stability.
The ministry reaffirmed the kingdom's firm and unchanging position of rejecting all forms of interference in the internal affairs of states and violations of their territorial sovereignty, calling for the principles of good neighborliness and international law to be fully respected.
Riyadh's condemnation came as the attack on the KRG Prime Minister's office generated a strong wave of international and domestic condemnation. Two Hadid-110 drones launched from within Iranian borders struck official KRG government sites in Pirmam district at 00:28 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026, according to the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate. No casualties were reported. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani responded to the strikes with a firm statement, saying: "These attacks cannot stop us. We will continue our duties and the protection of our citizens."
Saudi Arabia's condemnation carries particular weight given Riyadh's own experience as a target of Iranian drone and missile attacks throughout the six-month conflict. The kingdom paused shipments from its Gulf export terminals of Ras Tanura and Juaymah on March 9, 2026, after Iranian attacks disrupted tanker traffic, and participated alongside the United States in joint precision strikes on Iranian proxy targets in eastern Iraq on July 28, 2026, in direct response to IRGC-directed attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.
The UAE had similarly issued an official condemnation of the strike on Monday, with the Independent Human Rights Commission of the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistan Rawendi Confederation also condemning the attack as a flagrant violation of international law and demanding serious international action. Saudi Arabia's statement on Tuesday adds one of the region's most influential voices to that growing international chorus of condemnation.
