Qatar Condemns Drone Strike on KRG Prime Minister's Office as Flagrant Violation of International Law and Iraqi Sovereignty
Doha expresses full solidarity with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, calls for de-escalation and a return to dialogue, and backs all measures taken to preserve their sovereignty and security
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official condemnation on Tuesday, of the drone strikes that targeted the office of the Kurdistan Region Government Prime Minister and the residence of the head of the Security and Intelligence Agency in Erbil governorate, describing the attacks as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and a clear breach of international law.
In its statement, issued on Tuesday, Qatar's Foreign Ministry emphasized the necessity of sparing the region the consequences of unjustified attacks, continuing on the path of dialogue and diplomacy, and reducing escalation, in a way that contributes to consolidating security and stability at both the regional and international levels.
The ministry reaffirmed Qatar's full solidarity with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and its support for all measures taken to preserve their sovereignty and security.
The Qatari condemnation is notable given the particularly complex position Doha occupies in the current regional landscape. Qatar has served throughout the six-month US-Iran conflict as one of the primary mediating channels between Washington and Tehran, hosting indirect talks between the two sides on multiple occasions and playing a central role in the diplomatic process that produced the June 17, 2026, memorandum of understanding.
At the same time, Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American military installation in the Middle East, which Iran struck during the July 2026 escalation. Qatar's own territory has therefore been exposed to the conflict's direct military dimensions while its diplomats have simultaneously worked to contain them.
By condemning the drone strike on KRG government sites in explicit terms as a flagrant violation of international law, Qatar is sending a signal that its mediating role does not translate into tolerance for Iranian attacks on its neighbors' sovereignty. The ministry's specific call for a return to dialogue and diplomacy reflects Doha's consistent position throughout the conflict, but the language of condemnation is unambiguous and unqualified.
The attack on Monday saw two Hadid-110 drones launched from within Iranian borders strike the KRG Prime Minister's private office and the landing site of the Kurdistan Protection Agency Director in Pirmam district at 00:28 a.m., according to the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate. No casualties were reported. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani responded on Monday with the statement: "These attacks cannot stop us. We will continue our duties and the protection of our citizens."
Qatar's condemnation on Tuesday joins those of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the Iraqi federal government, the Independent Human Rights Commission of the Kurdistan Region, and the Kurdistan Rawendi Confederation, forming one of the broadest international responses to a single Iranian strike on Kurdistan Region territory since the conflict began.
