Warmawa–Darbandikhan Road Project Reaches 27 Percent Completion
The road connects Sulaimani, Darbandikhan, Kalar, and Kifri, making it an important transport link between several major cities in the region.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Work on the strategic Warmawa–Darbandikhan road project in the Kurdistan Region has reached 27 percent completion, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said Thursday, as part of its broader efforts to modernize the region’s road infrastructure.
The project will transform the 31.6-kilometer route into a full dual carriageway, with each carriageway measuring 8.5 meters wide. The road connects Sulaimani, Darbandikhan, Kalar, and Kifri, making it an important transport link between several major cities in the region.
According to the KRG Department of Media and Information, construction crews will excavate around 2.1 million cubic meters of material and use about 900,000 cubic meters for filling work as the project progresses.
The project also includes the construction of three dual-carriageway concrete bridges, 16 large culverts, 44 smaller culverts, and 600 meters of retaining walls designed to strengthen the road and improve its long-term stability and durability.
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and strengthen connectivity between Sulaimani and the cities and districts along the route.
The KRG said improving road infrastructure remains a priority, with ongoing projects across the Kurdistan Region aimed at upgrading transportation networks, improving public safety, and supporting economic and commercial connectivity.
The Warmawa–Darbandikhan project is part of the KRG’s wider infrastructure drive, which has included the construction and rehabilitation of roads, bridges, and other transport facilities across the region.
In August, the KRG said more than 5.3 trillion Iraqi dinars (approximately $4 billion) had been allocated to its broader infrastructure campaign, which includes road modernization and reconstruction projects. The government said 1,271 service and engineering projects had been completed and nearly 5,940 kilometers of roads had been paved as part of its infrastructure efforts.
