ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will travel to Damascus on Wednesday, for an official visit and talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, focusing on bilateral relations, border security, and economic cooperation.

A source from the Iraqi prime minister’s office told Kurdistan24 that al-Zaidi will be accompanied by a senior federal government delegation.

The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen and normalize relations between Baghdad and Damascus across various sectors, according to information obtained by Kurdistan24.

Security coordination is also expected to feature prominently in the talks, particularly efforts to tighten control over the shared Iraqi-Syrian border, prevent infiltration, and maintain stability in border areas.

The discussions are also expected to address expanding economic cooperation and boosting trade between the two countries to advance their mutual interests.

Relations between Iraq and Syria have been moving toward normalization following the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Since al-Zaidi took office, he and al-Sharaa have met on the sidelines of United Nations meetings in the United States.

The political transition in Syria has prompted regional governments, including Iraq, to reassess their diplomatic and economic ties with Damascus’s new authorities.

Given the extensive shared border and continuing security challenges in the region, coordination between Baghdad and Damascus remains a key issue for both governments, particularly in preventing cross-border infiltration and maintaining stability.
