Kurdish artist NOURI surpasses Ariana Grande to top pop charts in MENA

Kurdish pop artist NOURI’s single “Where Do We Go From Here” tops the charts on the Middle East and North Africa’s largest streaming service, Anghami.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish pop artist NOURI’s single “Where Do We Go From Here” tops the charts on the Middle East and North Africa’s largest streaming service, Anghami.

The Kurdish singer and songwriter, who released the music video for her single last month, has surpassed the likes of Ariana Grande and ZAYN to be number one on the pop charts.

“The song and music video are about the struggle of wanting to be with someone you care deeply for but at the same time wanting to let them go because the timing isn’t right,” the Kurdish artist told Kurdistan 24 in November.

“I am overwhelmed by all the love and support I have received since releasing my debut single.”

NOURI was born in a Syrian refugee camp after her family fled the Kurdistan Region in 1991. Her parents were denied entry into bordering Iran and instead went to Syria to seek refuge from the brutalities of the Saddam Hussein regime.

In 1995, after NOURI was born, her family moved to New Zealand which would become their new home.

Although she now lives in Los Angeles in the United States, the Kurdish singer says she wants to return to Kurdistan one day to perform her music for her fans back home.

“I definitely want to be performing in Kurdistan. I’ve received an overwhelming amount of support on Instagram and Facebook from all my Kurdish brothers and sisters back home. I love you all,” she told Kurdistan 24 in an interview in June.

NOURI is currently working on a five to six-track EP with a host of talented producers from all over the US. The self-titled album is expected for release in 2019.
