Iraqi model, fashion icon killed in Baghdad

Tara Fares had been living the Kurdistan Region capital but was recently moving between Erbil and Baghdad.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has announced the death of a female model after gunmen opened fire at her in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

On Thursday, Iraqi media reported that unknown assailants killed Tara Fares, a well-known model and social media fashion icon, in Baghdad’s Kam Sara neighborhood.

The Director of Media at Baghdad’s Rusafa Health Center told Iraqi media outlets that Fares’ body arrived at Sheikh Zaid hospital at 5:45 p.m. (local time). The model suffered three bullet wounds.

In a statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior said investigations into the killing of the model had begun.

The 22-year-old, who was voted as Baghdad’s beauty queen in 2015, was living in the Kurdistan Region capital of Erbil but had been moving back and forth to Baghdad.

Fares has millions of followers on social media outlets, including over two million on Instagram.

In August, Rafeef al-Yaseri, the owner of “Barbie” beauty center, and Rasha al-Hassan, a beauty expert and owner and manager of Viola beauty center in Baghdad, both died in mysterious circumstances in their respective homes.

The beauticians’ deaths fostered concerns over militias and armed groups systematic targeting of beauty center owners.
