Eight killed, 10 wounded in Baghdad suicide attack

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – A car bomb explosion on a busy street in Baghdad’s Adan district on Saturday killed and wounded dozens of people.

According to Iraqi authorities, the blast in Baghdad was a suicide bombing which killed eight people and wounded at least 10 others.

Police and hospital sources told the Associated Press the suicide blast struck the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Adan, targeting a police checkpoint on a crowded street where several officers were among the casualties.

In an official statement, the Head of Baghdad’s Provincial Council said the suicide explosion had targeted his convoy while it passed through the busy street, killing one of his guards and wounding three others.

Additionally, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior—referring to the same security incident—announced that several people were injured while attempting to thwart the suicide attack in northern Baghdad.

No side has claimed responsibility for the violence yet.

Attacks targeting the civilian population are on the rise in Iraq despite Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s “final victory” announcement last month signaling the military defeat of the Islamic State in the country.
