ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani on Wednesday received British Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Charles Hitchen in Erbil’s Pirmam in which they discussed the Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections, according to a statement from Barzani Headquarters.

“It has been two years since the elections were postponed due to various political reasons and external incitements. Now that the electoral law has been amended by a political decision of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court in accordance with an external agenda, they are advocating for the elections to take place,” the statement read.

Elections should be held, but away from foreign interference and deliberate political moves by the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court aimed at bringing down the Kurdistan Democratic Party, per the statement.

Also, the statement added that the KDP’s demands are legal and within the framework of the constitution and for the sake of holding fair and transparent elections.

"We rely on the legitimacy of our people's cause and the Kurdistan Region was created with the blood and tears of the Kurdish people, not by decisions outside the will of the Kurdish people," KDP President Masoud Barzani stated.

The British Ambassador to Iraq stressed that his country has been supporting the Kurdistan Region since the early 1990s.

Hitchen noted that the role of the KDP in the political process in Iraq and Kurdistan is important and the political process and elections in the Kurdistan Region will not be complete without the role of the KDP.

KDP Political Bureau in a statement on March 13 said that they "refrain from justifying unconstitutional and undemocratic elections.”
