ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – An explosion targets the Iraqi capital of Baghdad killing at least 17 people.

On Wednesday, a suicide truck bomber targeted a security check-point in Baghdad’s Yousifiya neighborhood, southern Iraqi capital, killing at least 17 people and wounding 60  others, police sources told Rueters.

"They said the bomber detonated his explosives among other vehicles waiting to be searched at the checkpoint, setting some of them on fire," Reuters reported.

Three Iraqi police officers were among the casualti4es while the rest were civilians, police and health officials told AP on condition of anonymity.

In an online statement, the Islamic State (IS) claimed the responsibility of the attack, stating that it was carried out by a suicide bomber driving a truck that carried several tonnes of explosive material.

The extremist group has carried out similar attacks in Baghdad and other cities in Iraq as they continue to lose territorial control inside Mosul.

On March 20, an explosion hit the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing at least 23 people and wounding over 40 more, according to a police source.
