ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Turkish Coast Guard has rescued 12 migrants and arrested 83 others attempting to enter Greece illegally via the coasts of Izmir and Balıkesir.

According to a statement issued by the Coast Guard Command, 12 migrants were rescued after their boat capsized off the coast of Dikili, Izmir. Additionally, 62 migrants, including 11 children, were detained in the Urla township of Izmir.

In a separate incident, 21 migrants were arrested off the coast of Ayvalık in Balıkesir while attempting to reach the Greek island of Lesbos.

The statement also noted that legal action had been initiated against the migrants, who will be transferred to the immigration directorates of both provinces for further processing.

The Turkish Coast Guard's recent operations to rescue and apprehend migrants attempting to enter Greece illegally highlight the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by migrants seeking to cross into Europe.

Turkey has been a key transit country for migrants and refugees attempting to reach Europe, and the country has taken various measures to curb illegal immigration, including increased patrols and cooperation with European authorities.

The Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea remain a perilous route for migrants, as they often undertake dangerous journeys in overcrowded boats with little regard for their safety.

Despite these risks, many migrants continue to attempt the treacherous journey for better opportunities and refuge in Europe.
