Pack of stray dogs became quite common on streets, avenues

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Stary dog attacks within the Raparin Independent Administration border doubled according to the latest statement by Veterinary Director of Raparin Dr. Saadi Tayeb.

Dr. Tayeb further advised through Kurdistan 24 “The problem is not only stray dogs bite, it causes serious health complications, it carries serious microbial diseases. Majority of very dangerous viral diseases transferred through dogs especially stray dogs, as well as carrying parasites, worms (hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms), bacterial and fungal infections, also scabies and different skin contractable diseases.”

He pointed out the general impression of seeing packs of stary dogs on the streets and avenues give inappropriate look to the city view, moreover psychologically, people became very frightened, especially children and women.

Many proposed different solutions for maintaining stray dogs under control and reassuring residents of safety. Building shelters in all cities and towns in the Kurdistan Region was one of them.

Raparin’s Public Health Setting Spokesperson Taha Mhammed revealed in an interview with Kurdistan 24 the statistics of causalities in past 6 months. The data indicated people who were attacked by stary dogs are more than doubled in comparison to who were injured by car accidents, 231 by 130 causalities recorded.

Mohammed stated “Hospitals run out of the vaccines that protect against the fatal viral infections caused by dog attacks”, also said “the local authority likewise would run out of dog vaccines.”

There has been death reports due to dog bites and attacks. It was confirmed by the public health sector that dogs carry the following viruses:

  • Parvovirus, a contagious,
  • Distemper, in some dogs can be fatal,
  • Infectious Hepatitis,
  • Leptospirosis,
  • Kennel,
  • Rabies.

Each country has their own regulations regarding dog attacks, some took it very seriously which reached up to rule out the sentences to the dog owners. For example, UK has a Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, which enacted imprisoning for up to 14 years, be disqualified from ownership or their dangerous dogs can be euthanized.

The council built a shelter in Erbil city, for the stray dogs be taken care of. But people required the local authorities to tackle that problem and seek other solutions.
