KRG, WFP collaborate to boost agriculture, restore burned forests

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Thursday, the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources announced a new partnership with the World Food Program (WFP) aimed at improving agriculture, irrigation, and reforesting areas damaged by fires in the Kurdistan Region.
During a recent meeting, a special committee from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources met with WFP management staff to review ongoing projects and discuss future initiatives.
The discussions focused on key areas such as combating climate change, increasing green spaces, enhancing nursery management, and supporting local beekeepers. They also emphasized the importance of training agricultural graduates to boost domestic production.
The meeting highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and equipment to repair and construct ponds and irrigation systems, as well as the reactivation of meteorological stations.
Additionally, the participants discussed the importance of recycling, heavy water treatment, and the reuse of treated water for agricultural purposes.
A significant portion of the discussions centered on the continued efforts to rehabilitate nurseries and plant trees in areas where forests have been damaged by fires and natural disasters.
The Ministry and WFP both stressed the importance of these initiatives in mitigating the impacts of climate change and revitalizing the region's agricultural sector.
