PM Masrour Barzani, new US Consul General address several key issues

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received the newly appointed US Consul General to the region, Steve Bitner, on Thursday.

At the outset of the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani extended his congratulations to Consul General Bitner on assuming his new role, wishing him success in his duties.

He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the former Consul General, Mark Stroh, for his contributions during his tenure, which played a significant role in strengthening the bilateral relations between the United States and the Kurdistan Region.

In response, Consul General Bitner affirmed the United States' readiness to further strengthen and deepen relations with the Kurdistan Region across various fields. He emphasized the vital role the Kurdistan Region plays as a key partner of the United States in fostering security and stability in Iraq and the broader region.

The US Consul General also referenced Prime Minister Barzani’s official visit to the United States in February of this year, underscoring the visit's pivotal role in informing senior US officials about the developments and changes occurring in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the surrounding region.

He expressed hope for the continuation of such visits to further enhance mutual understanding and cooperation.

The meeting also addressed several key issues, including preparations for the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament elections, ongoing reforms within the Peshmerga Ministry, the importance of resolving outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, ensuring the constitutional rights of the region’s citizens, and the implementation of the Sinjar Agreement.
