ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Ali Hussein, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Politburo, has accused Iraqi politician Mohammed al-Halbousi of exploiting the Kurdistan Region issue as a political tool to gain leverage amid his disputes with Shiite factions.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, September 19, 2024, attended by a Kurdistan24 correspondent, Hussein stressed the importance of the Peshmerga’s historic role and condemned al-Halbousi’s political maneuvering.

“The Kurdish Peshmerga forces are part of our nation’s historical struggle, and Iraqi political parties that fought against dictatorship in the mountains understand the significance of the Peshmerga forces. However, those who were not involved in the armed and political struggle against the Baath regime lack the appreciation of the Peshmerga’s role in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region,” Hussein declared.

He emphasized that the Peshmerga play a crucial part in Iraq’s defense system, notably in the fight against ISIS, and had safeguarded Baghdad prior to the establishment of the modern Iraqi state.

Hussein further pointed out, “Halbousi's comments are driven by his political challenges, not just with Shiite factions but also other parties within Iraq, who seek to turn the Kurdistan issue into a bargaining chip for their own political gains.”

Mahma Khalil, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, echoed Hussein’s sentiments. In an interview with Kurdistan24 on Wednesday, Khalil remarked, “Those who now criticize the Peshmerga were once under its protection, with the people of Kurdistan offering them bread and security.”

Khalil went on to criticize Halbousi’s motives, saying, “Mohammed al-Halbousi is resorting to a failed political strategy by attacking the Peshmerga, a force that has bravely stood against dictatorial regimes throughout its history.”

Khalil also stressed the broader significance of the Peshmerga, highlighting that its role extends beyond defending the Kurds.

“The Peshmerga, under President Barzani’s leadership, have provided protection for all Iraqi political parties and groups during different periods. They have earned the respect and gratitude of many.”

Halbousi recently sparked controversy by rejecting the arming of local forces with advanced heavy weaponry, specifically targeting the Peshmerga.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Halbousi wrote, “We categorically reject arming local forces, whose constitutional duty is limited to internal security within their jurisdiction, with advanced heavy artillery.”

Responding to Halbousi’s remarks, Kurdish politician Hoshyar Zebari criticized his stance, labeling it “populist.” On September 15, 2024, Zebari took to X, stating, “Mr. Mohammed al-Halbousi’s position on the Peshmerga forces receiving a small portion of defensive weapons from the international coalition reflects cheap populism and the unhealthy mindset of opportunistic politicians.”

Zebari added, “Why not use these weapons solely against Iraq’s enemies?”
