KRG turns village reconstruction into reality, boosts rural economy

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is taking concrete steps to revitalize villages through infrastructure development, opening doors for economic growth and reversing urban migration trends.
Over the past four years, the KRG Ministry of Construction and Housing has spearheaded efforts to improve rural connectivity, constructing over 200 asphalt roads and extending the national electricity grid to numerous villages.
This infrastructure development, coupled with the construction of ponds and dams, has not only enhanced the living standards in villages but has also created a conducive environment for agricultural and horticultural activities to flourish.
Crucially, the KRG's focus on market access and product marketing for rural produce has played a pivotal role in boosting the rural economy. By enabling villagers to sell their produce effectively, the government is fostering economic self-sufficiency and food security.
"In winter, our road was in a terrible condition, even small cars could barely make it up," said Yousef Hamademin, a villager who expressed his gratitude to the KRG for the road repairs.
The improved infrastructure is not only benefiting the rural residents but is also generating employment opportunities for thousands of urban dwellers.
The ninth cabinet of the KRG has prioritized village reconstruction, recognizing the crucial role villages play in the region's stability and food security. This commitment has instilled confidence in the villagers, encouraging them to return from cities and rebuild their communities.
"If villagers receive all the necessary services, they will not return to the cities," Kosar Hama Salih, the director of road reconstruction and repair in Koya, told Kurdistan24.
In the last five years, the Ministry of Reconstruction has executed approximately 600 road projects, including bridges, tunnels, and rural roads. This infrastructure development has significantly improved accessibility for over 200 villages, fostering economic growth and connectivity.
The KRG's proactive approach to village reconstruction is not just transforming the rural landscape, but also ensuring a brighter future for the region by creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening food security.
