ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The UN announced that the Security Council's 9803rd meeting, on Friday, is about the situation concerning Iraq that will be held at 6 p.m. (Baghdad local time). 

UNAMI posted through X platform a brief massage about today's meeting, and the Security Council published its monthly report - December Forecast about Kurdistan Region and Iraq. 

The Security Council is said to hold an open briefing to discuss the situation in Iraq, the latest incidents and changes in the state, and the UN media outlets to broadcast the session. 

Furthermore, highlights will be made on the parliamentary general elections were held in Kurdistan Region on October 20th, 2024, in which the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) won and gained 39 seats in the parliament. 

The report also mentioned the Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq's congratulations message to the region for successfully holding the elections “in a calm and peaceful manner”. 

The steps towards forming the new government cabinet in the region as well as the UN’s engagement with Iraq to brief in the session. 

The Special Representative and Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq Dr. Mohamed al-Hassan will brief the council on recent developments in the country. It is expected, to highlight the conducting of the general census and the impact of the climate changes on Iraq and region. 

The Security Council's report about Iraq, for this month December 2024, is closely monitoring the security situation in Iraq, discussing the Iraqi militia groups—considered Iranian proxies and stressing the situation remains tense. 

The report included the tensions between Iraq and the US. After the US retaliated in February for previous Iraqi militia strikes against US military bases in Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.
