ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Iraqi government is closely monitoring the escalating tensions in Syria, highlighting the impact of the crisis on Iraq's national security, according to government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi.

Speaking to Kurdistan24 on Friday, al-Awadi expressed deep concern over the developments in Syria, emphasizing Iraq’s opposition to the fragmentation of the neighboring country. "Syria's national security certainly affects Iraq, and we are against the division of the country," he stated.

Iraq has intensified its border security measures to counter potential threats, he revealed. "We have tightened our borders and are ready to respond to any terrorist attack," al-Awadi said, adding that Iraq is actively seeking a "balanced political solution" to address the ongoing crisis and its consequences.

The spokesperson acknowledged the challenges Iraq faces, noting the seriousness of the threats but affirming the country's resilience. "The threats faced by Iraq are dangerous, but we have managed to overcome these challenges without incurring financial or political risks," he remarked.

Al-Awadi also highlighted the broader regional impact of the situation, attributing some of Iraq’s difficulties to external factors. "If it weren't for the events in Gaza, the situation in Iraq would be better," he concluded.
