ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – According to a report by South Korean News Agency Yonhap, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been impeached following the National Assembly vote on Saturday.
The decision was made following a controversial attempt by President Yoon to implement martial law in the country. A decision that was vehemently opposed by both the opposition and Mr. Yoon’s political party.
As reported by Yonhap, the impeachment motion against Mr. Yoon passed 204-85, with three abstentions and eight invalid ballots.
The decision to impeach the South Korean president came 11 days after the botched declaration of martial law that surprised the South Korean public and caused widespread protest across the country in opposition to Yoon’s government.
The situation was followed up by the encirclement of the South Korean National Assembly by the military. Yonhap wrote that this was an “apparent attempt to stop lawmakers from repealing the decree.”
Subsequently, the martial law was lifted within six hours after the Assembly voted against it.
“Yoon will be suspended from his duties as soon as the impeachment resolution is delivered to his office,” the news agency wrote.
In his place, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will be the acting president until the Constitutional Court delivers its ruling.
