Stampede at Syria's Umayyad Mosque kills four and injures 16

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A tragic stampede at the iconic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus on Friday left at least four people dead and 16 others wounded, according to local health authorities.

Mohammed Akram Maatouq, Director of Damascus Health, confirmed the death toll and the number of injuries, stating that the incident took place during a civilian event at the mosque. The event was reportedly connected to the distribution of free meals, which drew a large crowd to the site.

Chef Abu Omar, who had posted a video promoting the event, reportedly organized the distribution. Chef Abu Omar is a popular figure who operates a restaurant in Istanbul.

The stampede occurred shortly after a morning visit to the mosque by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who had been in the area for diplomatic purposes.
