ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Turkey’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Berris Ekinci, and her accompanying delegation on Tuesday to discuss key issues of mutual interest, including trade, energy cooperation, and regional stability.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, with a particular focus on expanding trade and energy cooperation.

The discussion underscored the long-standing economic ties between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration to bolster economic growth and stability in the region.

A central point of the discussion was the resumption of the Kurdistan Region’s oil exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

The talks gained new momentum following the recent approval by the Iraqi Parliament of a federal budget law amendment addressing production and transportation costs related to the Kurdistan Region’s oil.

This legislative development has paved the way for restarting oil exports, which have been a crucial source of revenue for the region.

Development Road Project and Kurdistan’s Strategic Role

In addition to energy cooperation, the meeting also covered the ambitious Development Road project—an infrastructure initiative aimed at linking Gulf countries and Iraq with Turkey and Europe via an advanced railway network.

Both parties highlighted the strategic importance of the Kurdistan Region’s active participation in this project, given its geographical position as a critical transit hub.

Prime Minister Barzani and Deputy Minister Ekinci agreed that the successful implementation of this project would significantly enhance economic integration across the region, fostering increased connectivity, trade, and investment.

The project aligns with broader regional efforts to facilitate cross-border commerce and modernize infrastructure.

Regional Security and the Syrian Situation

Beyond economic discussions, the meeting also addressed regional security challenges, with a particular focus on the evolving situation in Syria.

Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining Syria’s security and stability, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.

A key point of consensus was the necessity of safeguarding the rights of the Kurdish people and other ethnic and religious components of Syrian society.

Both parties stressed the importance of fostering inclusive governance in Syria that respects the rights of all communities while ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.

Diplomatic and Economic Outlook

The meeting between Prime Minister Barzani and Deputy Minister Ekinci highlights the deepening cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey in multiple strategic sectors.

With discussions covering energy, infrastructure, and security, the dialogue reflects a shared vision for regional stability and economic progress.

As efforts move forward, both sides expressed their commitment to maintaining constructive dialogue and implementing the agreements reached.

The outcomes of this meeting could play a vital role in shaping future economic and diplomatic engagements between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey, contributing to long-term stability and prosperity in the region.
