Iraqi PM holds productive call with US Secretary of Defense to discuss key issues

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraq's Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, engaged in a significant phone conversation with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Sunday, focusing on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations. The discussion highlighted ongoing collaboration in regional security and counter-terrorism efforts.

During the call, Secretary Hegseth reaffirmed the United States' commitment to its operations against the Houthis, particularly if they persist in their attacks on shipping routes in the Red Sea. The United States has made it clear that it will take necessary actions to safeguard vital international trade and security in the region.

Prime Minister al-Sudani responded with a strong commitment to regional stability, stating, "We will protect the international coalition advisers, and weapons should be in the hands of the state only." This declaration underscored Iraq's dedication to ensuring the security of its citizens and its continued cooperation with international partners in maintaining peace and stability.

Meanwhile, both sides stressed continued cooperation within the framework of the international coalition to defeat ISIS. 

The exchange between the two leaders reflects the deepening ties between Iraq and the United States, with a shared focus on combating threats to regional peace and upholding the principles of security and sovereignty.
