ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized the need for Syria’s new government to be inclusive of all political and social components of the country. Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Macron affirmed France’s readiness to engage with Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria’s transitional president, under specific conditions.

During the press conference on Friday, Macron stated that he is prepared to meet with Ahmad al-Sharaa, provided that the new Syrian government commits to governing transparently, engaging civil society, and ensuring security for the return of displaced Syrians.

The French president underscored that the transitional government must address terrorism decisively, ensure the safe return of refugees, and guarantee political inclusivity—three key conditions set by Paris for engaging with the new Syrian leadership.

Upcoming Diplomatic Talks

Macron also signaled his administration’s willingness to continue dialogue with Syria’s new authorities and said discussions on the matter would intensify in the coming weeks. He noted that Paris expects further clarity on Syria’s transition and that consultations with international partners remain ongoing.

Al-Sharaa Warns of Israeli Threats in Southern Syria

Meanwhile, Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria’s transitional president, has raised concerns over growing security threats posed by Israel in southern Syria. In a statement on Friday, the Syrian presidency warned that southern regions of the country are facing heightened security instability.

Al-Sharaa described Israel’s presence in Syrian territory as a persistent threat to regional peace and stability, emphasizing that such actions continue to undermine Syria’s sovereignty.

Israeli Airstrikes in Daraa

Tensions escalated further on Thursday, when sources reported that five civilians were killed in Syria’s southern Daraa province following Israeli airstrikes. The attack also forced numerous residents to flee their homes, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Macron’s statements reflect France’s strategic interest in shaping Syria’s transitional phase, reinforcing Paris’ position that any new leadership must align with international expectations for inclusivity, stability, and counterterrorism efforts.
