KRG Plans Solar Loan Program to Expand Green Energy
Sana'an Abdullah, Director of the Environmental Awareness and Media Office, told Kurdistan24 on Friday that the program aims to support everyday citizens in making the switch to clean energy.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — In a promising step toward a greener future, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is preparing to launch a new initiative that would provide long-term loans to citizens for installing solar energy systems in their homes.
Sana'an Abdullah, Director of the Environmental Awareness and Media Office, told Kurdistan24 on Friday that the program aims to support everyday citizens in making the switch to clean energy. “The KRG is considering providing long-term loans to citizens for installing solar energy systems in their homes,” he stated, adding that the loans will first be available to those with existing bank accounts.
“Every ordinary citizen can qualify for the loan, but they must provide proof of having a bank account,” Abdullah explained. He confirmed that the project had already been thoroughly discussed and is expected to be implemented shortly.
This announcement follows the KRG’s recent success in bringing solar energy to public schools. In a landmark move, solar electricity systems have already been installed in 81 schools across Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok, Halabja, Kirkuk, and independent administrations, ensuring uninterrupted power and reducing reliance on generators.
In a continued commitment to sustainability and educational support, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has allocated an additional five billion Iraqi dinars to extend solar power to 76 more schools.
These initiatives mark a significant step toward energy independence and environmental sustainability in the Kurdistan Region, as both government institutions and private citizens move toward harnessing the power of the sun.
