KRSC Condemns Terrorist Drone Attacks on Peshmerga, Warns of Plots to Destabilize the Region
The Council affirmed that both the Peshmerga and internal security forces stand fully prepared to respond appropriately to any further attempts to disrupt regional peace and governance.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — A terrorist group carried out two separate drone attacks targeting Peshmerga forces in Duhok province, wounding five Peshmerga soldiers, according to a statement released on Monday by the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC).
The twin attacks occurred late Sunday and early Monday, striking military positions of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces near the border areas of Duhok. Although the statement did not name the group behind the attacks, it warned of a deliberate attempt to destabilize the security and peace processes currently underway in the region.
“The wounded Peshmerga are in stable condition,” the statement said. “They remain determined, with unwavering resolve, to confront any form of hostile assault or terror scheme against the region.”
The KRSC condemned the attacks as "terrorist" in nature and issued a stern warning to all groups and individuals aiming to undermine the Kurdistan Region’s hard-won stability.
The attacks come at a particularly sensitive time in the Kurdistan Region’s political landscape. Peace negotiations in Turkey’s Kurdish-majority southeast, also known as "Kurdistan of Turkey", efforts to unify Kurdish factions in northern Syria, also known as "Kurdistan of Syria," and the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s new cabinet are all progressing. These developments represent a broader momentum toward political stability across the region.
However, the KRSC suggested that certain parties and armed groups are intentionally seeking to derail this progress by targeting Peshmerga forces — a key pillar of the region’s defense and security apparatus.
The Council affirmed that both the Peshmerga and internal security forces stand fully prepared to respond appropriately to any further attempts to disrupt regional peace and governance.
The Kurdistan Region has faced multiple asymmetric threats over the past decade, including from remnants of ISIS, regional proxy groups, and drone incursions. Yet the resilience of the Peshmerga and the vigilance of the security services have played a critical role in maintaining relative stability in Iraq’s most secure region.
The KRSC concluded its statement with a clear message of deterrence: “We will not tolerate these terrorist aggressions, and we will hold accountable those who attempt to compromise the security of the Kurdistan Region.”
