ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a significant diplomatic development, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is set to visit the United States in the coming days for a series of high-level meetings with American officials, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) confirmed on Wednesday.
The announcement was made by KRG spokesperson Peshewa Hawramani during a press conference held on Wednesday. Hawramani addressed a wide range of issues, including the Runaki Project, civil servant salaries, and the ongoing challenges in Erbil-Baghdad relations. However, the centerpiece of the briefing was the Prime Minister’s upcoming trip to Washington.
"Prime Minister Masrour Barzani will visit the United States and will hold a number of important meetings with American officials," Hawramani declared, emphasizing the strategic nature of the visit. He added that further details regarding the agenda and specific meetings would be disclosed in due course.
The announcement follows a recent telephone call between Prime Minister Barzani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday, April 11, 2025. In that conversation, both sides affirmed the critical importance of resuming the export of Kurdistan Region's oil through Turkey’s Ceyhan port, a matter of vital economic and geopolitical significance.
According to an official KRG statement released after the call, Secretary Rubio also conveyed Washington’s appreciation for the Kurdistan Region’s steadfast commitment to protecting all ethnic and religious communities. The United States praised the Region's role in fostering regional stability and security amidst a turbulent Middle East.
This forthcoming trip will mark Barzani’s first visit to the U.S. since February 26, 2024, when he met with then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken. During that meeting, Blinken reaffirmed the enduring U.S.-Kurdistan partnership, rooted in shared values and a legacy of cooperation.
"The United States has a long partnership with the KRG," Blinken stated at the time. "It is cemented, first and foremost, in shared values, shared interests, and also a shared history of sacrifice together."
Blinken emphasized the significance of the U.S.-Kurdish relationship, particularly in the context of past and ongoing regional security challenges. "The common fight is something that we take very seriously, and something that for me personally, over many, many years in working in this area, has meant a great deal," he said.
Barzani’s upcoming visit is expected to reinforce those historical ties while addressing pressing issues such as energy cooperation, regional diplomacy, security coordination, and continued American support for the Kurdistan Region’s institutional and democratic development.
Observers anticipate that the meetings will also provide an opportunity to elevate the Kurdish-American relationship amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the broader Middle East.
