ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday announced the signing of two landmark energy agreements with American companies HKN Energy and WesternZagros, describing the deals as a major step forward in the region’s economic development and partnership with the United States.
The multi-billion-dollar deals were signed during a ceremony hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. The event was attended by senior business leaders and U.S. officials, including Steve Lutes, Vice President of Middle East Affairs at the U.S. Chamber.
“These agreements underscore Kurdistan’s commitment to peace and progress through economic development,” Prime Minister Barzani said in his keynote address. “Both HKN and WesternZagros have long operated in our region and have played a vital role in driving growth that benefits not only the people of Kurdistan but all of Iraq.”
Barzani emphasized the Kurdistan Regional Government’s continued efforts to strengthen the energy sector as part of broader reform initiatives, including the goal of providing uninterrupted electricity across the region and exporting surplus power to other parts of Iraq.
“Our government is focused on long-term, sustainable energy solutions,” he said. “These new investments are critical for realizing that vision.”
The Prime Minister hailed the agreements as a milestone in U.S.-Kurdistan relations, noting the historic ties forged during the fight against tyranny and terrorism. He said that while security remains a cornerstone of the partnership, economic cooperation is now becoming a defining feature of bilateral relations.
“Economic development and energy investment are powerful tools that can deepen our relationship and strengthen our bonds,” Barzani stated. “This marks the beginning of a new era for our region.”
The Prime Minister extended his congratulations to the people of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, as well as to the American companies involved, for what he described as a "great achievement" for all parties.
Concluding his speech, Barzani thanked the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and all attendees, expressing hope for continued collaboration and friendship between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.
