ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Dilshad Shahab, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Presidency, announced on Thursday that all preparations are complete for a historic disarmament ceremony involving several fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), set to take place in Sulaimani province on Friday.

“The Kurdistan Region will host a very important and decisive process tomorrow,” Shahab stated during a press conference, highlighting the region’s commitment to peace and stability.

He noted that the Kurdistan Region has long advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and praised the role of President Masoud Barzani in championing efforts to end war and violence.

Shahab also pointed out that the Kurdistan Region has been one of the primary victims of the protracted conflict between the PKK and Turkey, with local populations suffering displacement and instability. He stressed that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is determined to reconstruct affected areas and enable residents to return to a peaceful life.

The announcement comes in the wake of a video dated June 19, in which jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan called for the formal dissolution of the group—a move seen by many as a turning point in the decades-long conflict.

Friday’s ceremony is expected to serve as a significant milestone in the broader peace process and a testament to the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing role as a host and facilitator of regional dialogue and reconciliation.
