ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) on Tuesday expressed its appreciation to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for its role in supporting the peace process, describing messages from Kurdistan Region political factions as “significant and encouraging.”
DEM Party: A Unified Message from Kurdistan’s Political Spectrum
In a statement on July 15, 2025, DEM Party spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan conveyed the party’s “special gratitude” to the KRG for hosting the recent symbolic disarmament ceremony and for advocating a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish question in Turkey.
Doğan said, “we affirm that the collective message from all political forces in the Kurdistan Region was deeply meaningful. Journalists and others who directly covered the ceremony conveyed the full scope of that message, which reflected a sincere desire for this process to advance swiftly.”
Vision for a Democratic and Just Turkey
Ayşegül Doğan reiterated DEM’s broader political vision, stating: “We want Turkey to become a truly democratic, just, and dignified country—one that embraces equality and peace as core values.” She emphasized that the party seeks a Turkey that is both prosperous and committed to shouldering responsibility for a durable peace.
Symbolic Disarmament as a Turning Point
The remarks follow a major milestone in the peace initiative: on Friday, July 11, thirty members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) laid down their weapons and burned them in a symbolic act of disarmament in the village of Jasena, located in the Sulaimani province of the Kurdistan Region.
This gesture, conducted after years of armed conflict between the PKK and the Turkish state, was hailed by multiple parties as a significant step toward reconciliation.
Kurdistan Region’s Role in Regional Stability
The Kurdistan Region has consistently positioned itself as a bridge for dialogue and stability in a region marked by protracted conflicts. The KRG’s facilitation of Friday’s event reaffirms its commitment to peace and underscores the importance of regional cooperation in ending decades of violence.
