British Defense Advisor Meets President Barzani, Condemns Drone Attacks on Kurdistan
The visiting British delegation strongly condemned the recent drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, reaffirming their country’s support for the Region’s stability and security.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — President Masoud Barzani on Thursday received a senior British military delegation led by Edward Ahlgren, the UK’s Senior Defense Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, at his headquarters in Pirmam, Erbil.
According to a statement issued by Barzani Headquarters, following the meeting, British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, Andrew Beasley, was also in attendance. The discussions focused on recent political and security developments in Iraq and the wider region, as well as threats posed to the Kurdistan Region.
The visiting British delegation strongly condemned the recent drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, reaffirming their country’s support for the Region’s stability and security. The delegation called for the immediate cessation of such attacks and urged that the perpetrators be identified and held accountable under the law.
The two sides also emphasized the importance of strengthening military and security cooperation and coordination between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the United Kingdom.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the KRG’s relations with the federal government in Baghdad and the internal political situation in the Kurdistan Region.
The visit of the British military delegation to President Barzani followed a separate meeting earlier on Wednesday with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. According to a statement published on the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) official website, Discussions centered on recent security developments in Iraq and the region, with both sides underscoring the need to enhance military coordination and cooperation.
The UK reaffirmed its support for ongoing reform efforts within the Ministry of Peshmerga, while Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the importance of respecting the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional status, safeguarding its financial rights, and ending continued terrorist and drone attacks. The meeting also touched on broader regional developments, including the situation in Syria and the Middle East.
