ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the district of Sındırgı in Balikesir province, Türkiye, according to state-run TRT TV and radio. The tremor was also felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces, causing concern across a wide area.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), along with all relevant institutions, immediately launched field surveys to assess the impact of the earthquake. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation moment by moment to coordinate response efforts.

Following the main quake, aftershocks measuring 4.6 and 4.1 in magnitude were also recorded in the same region.

In an official statement, wishes were extended for a speedy recovery to all those affected by the earthquake and its aftershocks.

About 10 buildings collapsed in Sındırgı, the epicenter of the earthquake, including a three-story building in the city center, Mayor Serkan Sak announced on Turkish private channel NTV. Six people lived in the building; four were rescued from the rubble, and efforts to extract the remaining two continue.

“Buildings and mosques were destroyed, but we have no reports of loss of life,” Sak added.

The quake struck at 7:53 pm local time (16:53 GMT). No deaths have been reported so far.

Türkiye sits on multiple geological fault lines and has experienced devastating earthquakes in recent years. A February 2023 quake in the southwest killed at least 53,000 people and devastated Antakya, the site of the ancient city of Antioch. In early July 2025, a 5.8-magnitude tremor in the same region resulted in one death and 69 injuries.
