Kurdistan Human Rights Commission Condemns Iranian Drone Strike on KRG Prime Minister's Office and Security Agency Site
Commission calls Monday's predawn attack a flagrant violation of Iraqi and Kurdistan Region sovereignty, urging the federal government and international community to take a clear and serious stance against continued Iranian aggression
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Independent Human Rights Commission of the Kurdistan Region issued a strong condemnation on Monday of an Iranian drone strike launched in the early hours of the morning against the private office of the Kurdistan Region's Council of Ministers President and the landing site of the Director of the Kurdistan Intelligence Agency in the Pirmam district of Erbil governorate.
The commission stated that the attack was launched from within the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran at 00:28 a.m. on Monday, targeting civilian and official installations in the heart of a populated area of the Kurdistan Region.
"We in the Independent Human Rights Commission strongly condemn and denounce this destructive drone attack," the statement read. "The deliberate targeting of populated areas and official institutions of the Kurdistan Region in this manner is a flagrant and dangerous violation of the sovereignty of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as a violation of all international norms, conventions, and the principles of human rights and citizens' right to security of life."
The commission emphasized that such actions create a serious threat to the stability and security of the Region and endanger the lives of its citizens. While expressing relief that the attack fortunately resulted in no loss of life, the commission stressed that protecting the security and lives of citizens is a fundamental right that cannot be compromised under any pretext, and that the Kurdistan Region's territory must not be turned into an arena for military attacks and messages.
The commission called on the Iraqi federal government and the international community to take a clear and serious stance against this type of continued violation and aggression, and to act to protect Iraq's territorial sovereignty and restore security and stability to the region.
On Sunday, the 60-day US-Iran memorandum of understanding expired, with both sides at an impasse and no final deal reached, leaving the conflict nearly six months old and unresolved. Monday's predawn drone strike on official KRG sites in Erbil governorate represents one of the most direct Iranian provocations against Kurdistan Region government infrastructure since the conflict began on Feb. 28, 2026, coming just hours after the MOU's expiration and on the same day as the KDP's 80th founding anniversary celebrations.
The attack on the Prime Minister's office site and the Kurdistan Protection Agency landing zone in Pirmam underscores the persistent exposure of the Kurdistan Region to Iranian military action despite the KRG's consistently maintained policy of neutrality throughout the conflict, a neutrality that Axios revealed on Sunday was exploited by Washington itself, with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani serving as a secret US backchannel to IRGC Commander General Ahmad Vahidi in May 2026.
