KDP Condemns Drone Attack, Urges Baghdad to Act
The KDP says attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region Prime Minister's office and a senior security official's home threaten stability and relations, urging Baghdad to prevent further violations.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Monday condemned overnight drone attacks targeting the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the director of the Protection Agency, warning that such incidents threaten stability and the development of relations between Erbil and Baghdad.
In a statement issued Monday, Aug. 17, the KDP Political Bureau said the attacks were particularly concerning as Iraq and the Kurdistan Region seek to preserve security and remain outside wider regional conflicts.
The party said the Kurdistan Region "has never been, and is not, part of these wars and conflicts," emphasizing its continued efforts to keep the Region and Iraq away from escalating regional tensions.
The KDP described the attacks as "subversive actions," saying they serve no side's interests and risk further complicating an already sensitive security and political environment.
The party called on the Iraqi federal government to treat the incident seriously, prevent similar attacks and respond through appropriate measures.
The KDP statement followed an announcement by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate that two explosive-laden drones had targeted the prime minister's private office and the residence of the head of the Protection Agency in Pirmam, Erbil province, shortly after midnight.
According to the directorate, the drones were identified as Hadid-110 models and were launched from across the Iranian border at about 12:28 a.m. Monday. No casualties were reported.
The counter-terrorism agency condemned the incident as "entirely unacceptable" and said those responsible would bear full responsibility for the consequences.
Prime Minister Barzani also said earlier Monday that an investigation had established that his office and the home of the head of the Kurdistan Region's security and intelligence agency were targeted by Iranian drone attacks.
"This is a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region," Prime Minister Barzani wrote on X, adding that the attacks would not deter the government from carrying out its duties or protecting citizens.
The KDP's response places particular emphasis on the potential political consequences of the attack. The party argued that continued efforts to separate the Kurdistan Region from regional confrontations could be undermined by strikes launched against senior political and security figures.
The incident also comes amid a recent rise in drone activity around Erbil. On Aug. 14, the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said Coalition forces had intercepted three explosive drones over the city between 2:17 a.m. and 2:25 a.m., with no casualties reported.
Monday's attack, however, carried added significance because the reported targets included the private office of the Kurdistan Region's prime minister and the residence of a senior security official.
The KDP said Baghdad has a responsibility to ensure that the Kurdistan Region is protected from such violations and that Iraq does not become further entangled in regional confrontations.
The party's warning comes as Erbil and Baghdad continue efforts to strengthen coordination on security and other outstanding issues, making the latest attack a potential test of that relationship.
