Kurdistan Reagion President Urges Baghdad to Act After Drone Attack on Prime Minister's Office

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Monday condemned an early morning drone attack targeting the private office of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Erbil province, describing the incident as a "dangerous escalation" and urging Iraq's federal government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to protect the country's security.

In a statement issued Monday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani strongly denounced the attack on the prime minister's office and the residence of the director of the Kurdistan Region's Protection Agency, known as Parastin. He called on Baghdad to take steps to prevent similar attacks from recurring.

"Protecting the sovereignty, security and stability of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, is a shared responsibility," the president said, according to his statement.

He stressed the need for all sides to work toward restoring calm and reducing regional tensions.

The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said two explosive-laden Hadid-110 drones were launched from across the Iranian border at about 12:28 a.m. Monday. The drones targeted the prime minister's private office and the residence of the Parastin director in the Pirmam district of Erbil province.

No casualties were reported.

The directorate condemned the incident as "entirely unacceptable" and said those responsible would bear full responsibility for the consequences.

The attack was also confirmed by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who said the Counter-Terrorism Directorate's investigation identified the Iranian origin of the drones.

"Following an investigation by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit, my personal office and the home of the head of the Security and Intelligence Agency were targeted by Iranian drone attacks earlier today," Prime Minister Masrour Barzani wrote on X.

He described the incident as "a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region," adding that such attacks would not deter the Kurdistan Regional Government from carrying out its duties.

The reported targeting of senior political and security figures comes amid heightened regional tensions and a series of drone incidents affecting the Kurdistan Region in recent weeks.

Last Friday, the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said Coalition forces had intercepted three explosive drones over Erbil. Residents in several parts of the city reported hearing the interceptions.

The latest attack is particularly significant because the reported targets were directly connected to the leadership of the Kurdistan Region's government and security institutions.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani's appeal to Baghdad places renewed emphasis on the federal government's constitutional role in protecting Iraq's territory and preventing attacks against any part of the country.

The incident is also likely to intensify calls for stronger air-defense and counter-drone capabilities to protect the Kurdistan Region's political institutions and strategic infrastructure.

The Kurdistan authorities have not reported major casualties or provided further details on the extent of damage as investigations continue.
