Canadian MP Condemns Drone Attacks on PM Barzani’s Office
He called for the investigation to be conducted “quickly and transparently,” with those responsible held accountable.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Canadian Member of Parliament Tom Kmiec, Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of the Kurds, has condemned the recent drone attacks targeting the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the head of the Kurdistan Region Security and Intelligence Agency (Parastin).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kmiec expressed concern over the attacks carried out in the early hours of Monday.
Earlier on Monday, the Kurdistan Region Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) said that two Iranian-made Hadid-110 explosive drones had targeted Barzani’s private office and the home of the Parastin chief. No casualties were reported, while investigations into the extent of the damage were ongoing.
Kmiec said the CTS had reported that the drones were launched from Iranian territory and welcomed the Iraqi government’s decision to establish a committee to determine responsibility for the attacks.
He called for the investigation to be conducted “quickly and transparently,” with those responsible held accountable.
The Canadian MP also warned that the attacks should not be viewed as an isolated incident, noting that the Kurdistan Region had faced hundreds of drone and missile strikes since February, which he said had killed and wounded civilians.
“Deliberately targeting a sitting head of government and a senior security official is an escalation of a different order,” Kmiec said.
He further highlighted Canada’s relationship with the Kurdistan Region, noting that Canadian Armed Forces personnel have served alongside the Peshmerga against ISIS and that Canadian parliamentarians have been received in Erbil by senior Kurdistan Region officials.
Kmiec urged the Government of Canada to publicly condemn the attacks alongside its allies and reaffirm Canada’s support for the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region and federal Iraq.
