USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group Arrives in Middle East

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A new US aircraft carrier strike group has arrived in the Middle East, the US military announced Thursday, as concerns over the prolonged deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln have drawn renewed attention amid the ongoing war with Iran.
The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group entered the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility on Wednesday as part of a scheduled deployment, CENTCOM said in a post on X. The group is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which has been deployed in the region supporting US military operations related to the conflict with Iran.
The USS Abraham Lincoln, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 3, left San Diego on November 21, 2025, and has spent an extended period at sea after being deployed to the Middle East. The carrier has reportedly broken records for the longest consecutive period without a port visit during its deployment.
The unusually prolonged deployment has prompted concerns from sailors' families and some US lawmakers over crew fatigue, morale, mental health, food and sanitation, and other conditions aboard the carrier. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected reports portraying conditions aboard the Lincoln as inadequate, while President Donald Trump has also downplayed concerns about the length of the deployment.
The arrival of the George Washington is expected to allow the Lincoln and its crew to begin rotating out after months of sustained operations in support of the US campaign against Iran. The Navy has described the replacement as a planned rotation, rather than a response solely to the concerns surrounding the Lincoln.
The deployment comes as the United States continues its military operations in the region and maintains a major naval presence around the Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.
