ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Erbil Governorate announced on Wednesday that, on the instruction of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, approval has been given to start a project to completely repair the Gerdi Zaytuna road and convert Maidan Street in the center of Shaqlawa district into a dual carriageway.

According to a statement from the governorate on Wednesday, the strategic service project is part of developing the road sector in the center of Shaqlawa district. It will be carried out at a cost of 9 billion dinars, with the aim of reducing street congestion and easing the movement of citizens and tourists.

The statement stressed that the project must be completed on schedule. It is to be implemented in the near future using an advanced engineering approach and the latest modern techniques, with the aim of ensuring the highest quality and preventing the road from deteriorating again in the future.

The step comes within the continuing efforts of the Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government to deliver service projects to all cities and towns and improve road infrastructure, in order to serve citizens and tourists more.

The KRG’s road work is not limited to the district center. Erbil Governor Omed Xoshnaw said on Saturday, Oct. 24, that the strategic Kore-Shaqlawa-Qandil road project, which includes the Mirawa and Mawaran tunnels, has reached its final stage and will soon open to citizens and tourists.

Xoshnaw said work on that project began on the order of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and falls within the vision and program of the Ninth Cabinet to strengthen and modernize road infrastructure across the Region. He said all sections and stages have so far been carried out successfully and without problems.

He added that local engineers carried out the project, following the highest quality standards and international engineering standards. In his view, this reflects the growing capacity of local expertise to manage large and strategic projects.

On technical details, Xoshnaw said the project consists of a 10-kilometer dual-carriageway expressway and the two strategic tunnels, along with three modern overpasses and underpasses built to international standards.

According to the governor, once completed the project will have a notable effect on reducing congestion, protecting citizens’ safety, and developing the area’s tourism and economic sectors.
