Qaysari bazaar awaits reconstruction amid KRG efforts

Qaysari bazaar, one of the fascinating landmarks in Erbil the capital city of Kurdistan region, is home to some of the oldest shops in Erbil downtown area. Some of these shops are dated back to more than 150 years ago.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – According to experts and older shop owners, Qaysari Bazaar is more than 150 years old. Many shops owner inherited their shops from their ancestors. It is considered as an important heritage for Erbil city, beside city’s Citadel and Choli minaret.  

Qaysari bazaar, one of the fascinating landmarks in Erbil the capital city of Kurdistan region, is home to some of the oldest shops in Erbil downtown area. Some of these shops are dated back to more than 150 years ago.

A part of Qaysari bazaar in the central Erbil, which was caught in fire on May 5 this year, is now awaiting reconstruction. 

The shop owners in that bazaar are waiting for the reconstruction process, but the reconstruction will have to be carried out by scientific and archeological teams in order to protect the architectural uniqueness of the bazaar.

The fire broke out into Qaysari Bazaar on May 5, resulted in the destruction of 228 shops and seven warehouses belonging to tradesmen and sellers in the market. A total of 30 fire brigade team from Erbil and neighboring areas were deployed to combat the blaze.

On May 9, the Erbil Municipality has announced the successful completion of the cleanup process at the historic Qaysari Bazaar in Erbil.

While no fatalities were reported, the substantial presence of people at the scene resulted in the injuries to 132 individuals, including civil defense personnel, security forces, police officers, traders, and bystanders. Immediate medical and hospitalization care were provided to them.

Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, paid a visit to Qaysari Bazaar which was engulfed in flames.

To prevent such incidents from reoccurring, the Premier has ordered all the relevant parties to establish firefighting units in all public places and to follow up on the implementation of measures and guidelines.

For the professional controlling accident, atmosphere and protecting the property of shop owners, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the members of the civil defense teams, the security forces, as well as the mayor and health teams.
