Suicide bombings kill, wound 55 in Baghdad

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Two suicide bombers targeted Shia Muslim processions in Baghdad on Monday killing at least 12 people, and wounding 43 others.
According to security and medical sources, a suicide bomber detonated his vest among a group of people commemorating the slaying of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hussein in Baghdad’s Amil district.
The explosion killed seven people and wounded 25 others.
Another suicide bomber targeted a Shia procession in the district of Mashtal in Baghdad, killing five people and injuring 18.
The commander of the Baghdad Operations Major General Jalil al-Rubaie said security forces would take all measures to develop a plan for the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, where Shia Muslims hold special processions.
“Baghdad Operations has taken all necessary measures to secure and protect the people during the month of Muharram,” Rubaie told reporters.
On Sunday, several explosions hit different areas of Baghdad in Basmaya, Forat, Ghazali, and Rashidiya, killing eight civilians and wounding 31 others.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) recently released its monthly report about the number of casualties in the country during the month of September.
According to the report, 609 civilians had been killed, and 951 wounded.
Regarding the number of casualties related to the security forces in Iraq, UNAMI stated 394 personnel had been killed including Peshmerga, SWAT, and militia fighting alongside the Iraqi Army.
Moreover, a total of 208 security fighters were killed.
Baghdad was the worst affected region in the country with 1,127 civilian casualties (289 killed and 838 wounded).
