UKH to hold annual conference about Kurds, Middle East

The University of Kurdistan – Hewler (UKH) will hold its annual conference on May 24-25, 2016, under the title Iraqi Kurdistan at a Crossroads: Current Issues of Domestic and Middle Eastern Politics.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The University of Kurdistan – Hewler (UKH) will hold its annual conference on May 24-25, 2016, under the title Iraqi Kurdistan at a Crossroads: Current Issues of Domestic and Middle Eastern Politics.

The conference will be hosted at the University campus by the UKH Center for Regional and International Studies (CRIS).

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the latest developments in Iraq in particular and the Middle East in general.

The topics of the conference include:

-The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in a post-Islamic State period,

-Erbil-Baghdad relations; political, economic and social challenges,

-neighboring countries’ policies toward the KRG,

-and major global powers’ strategies toward Iraq and Kurdistan.

Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered, according to the CRIS.

“There is one mounting force in the region that acquires the potential to seriously influence military and political developments in the region and whose action can be reasonably explained and interpreted,” the head of the Organizing Committee Professor Alex Danilovich told Kurdistan24 on Tuesday.

“This force is the Kurds who see an opportunity in the deepening security and political bedlam,” he continued.

Danilovich mentioned the conference would focus on the Kurds of Iraq who already have some polity with governmental structures and decades-long experience of taking care of their destiny within the loose Iraqi Federation.

Regarding the purpose of the conference, the Professor stated the meeting was purely academic.

However, he pointed out it was evident from its thematic scope the discussion’s findings were likely to be used in policy recommendations, as they would be looking into the most topical issues the KRG faces.

“Our comparative advantage is that the Conference on Kurdistan will be held in the very heart of the Kurdistan Region,” Danilovich said regarding the uniqueness of the upcoming event.

“Unlike other conferences held in the region that look more like political or media events, our conference is academic,” he added.

The conference is open to anyone interested, but the CRIS expects people with an academic background who are well versed in the regional affairs and able to make broad theoretical inferences to participate.
