Peshmerga to abolish all IS-confiscated explosives following depot explosion
Peshmerga’s Zervani forces on Sunday decided to destroy all arms and explosives confiscated from the Islamic State (IS) to avoid similar incidents in the future.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – After the second explosion at a weapons storage in Erbil, Peshmerga’s Zervani forces on Sunday decided to destroy all arms and explosives confiscated from the Islamic State (IS) to avoid similar incidents in the future.
On late Saturday evening, a massive explosion took place at a Peshmerga military depot near Erbil Airport.
The loud bang from the blast scared many people in the city who were worried the explosion was a terrorist attack.
Erbil Governor Nawzad Hadi immediately rejected rumors of a terrorist attack and confirmed the incident was caused by a fire at the weapons storage, adding there were no casualties.
Meanwhile, some officials said the blast was caused by the scorching temperatures in the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement on Sunday, Zeravani Peshmerga said the IS weapons and explosives had not been manufactured based on international standards or accurate scientific methods.
The statement also emphasized the forces had decided to destroy all the remaining IS weapons and explosives to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Saturday’s explosion was the second blast in a month. The first one took place at an arms depot on Aug. 5 where three Peshmerga were injured.
