KRG Council of Ministers addresses women rights

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani welcomed Shorish Ismail, the KRG Minister of Peshmerga Affairs in his return to office after an extended leave of absence.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Chaired by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers convened for a meeting on Wednesday, according to a statement from the KRG.

Prime Minister Barzani commenced the session by welcoming Shorish Ismail, the KRG Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, in his return to office after an extended leave of absence.

The Prime Minister also briefed the ministers on the KRG delegation’s trip to the 28th UN Climate Conference in Dubai.

The relevant ministers then discussed the latest developments in the budget and civil servant salaries of the Kurdistan Region after a recent visit of the Kurdish negotiating delegation to Baghdad last week.

To provide salaries for civil servants, the ministers called on the Iraqi Government to approve the amendment bill for the Federal Budget Law as soon as possible.

Later, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani presented a report on the increase in the number of cases of violence against women. Talabani pointed out the causes of violence and how to solve them, and he further called on the ministries and relevant parties to cooperate and implement strategies to combat gender-based violence (GBV).

Furthermore, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of women by taking strict measures and punishing all those who commit violence against women. Barzani then instructed relevant ministers to conduct a massive awareness campaign to combat GBV.

Lastly, Rebar Ahmed, the Interior Minister of the KRG, presented a report on his Tuesday meeting with the The General Directorate of Combating Violence against Women to solve women's issues and prevent GBV.
