ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Despite multiple livestock feed production factories in Erbil, the importation of fodder and livestock feed remains necessary year-round due to low barley production, according to Sayed Hemin Murad, the Director General of Agriculture in Erbil.

Murad explained to Kurdistan24 that barley is a primary ingredient in livestock feed production. He noted, "Barley is used extensively in industrial feed factories and by some livestock owners who grow it to meet their needs."

He further clarified, "There are no significant marketing issues with barley, unlike wheat. We do not cultivate barley in quantities that exceed market demand. The demand for barley is consistently higher compared to wheat."

Addressing the fodder imports, Murad stated, "Even with several feed production factories in Erbil, we allow fodder and livestock feed imports in every season due to the insufficient local production. There are no restrictions on importing these essential supplies."

Murad also highlighted Erbil's unique position, saying, "Compared to other cities in the Kurdistan Region and those under Iraqi government control, Erbil boasts the highest number of livestock feed production factories."
