Chamrga Dam Led To Water Resources, Well Replenishing  

The local residents in the nearby villages acknowledged the benefits of the Chamarga reservoir in their areas.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Building reservoirs and dams whether embankment or arch dams were an immense part in the 9th Cabinet of the Kurdistan Region Government’s plan, one of the distinctive dams is the Chamrga’s.

The government aimed to turn that area into a more revival for the locals to benefit from it whether in tourism and/ or as water reservoir.

Building dams and reservoirs are important for underground water, replenishing wells, agriculture, fish and tourism sectors. More importantly, to minimize the negative climate changes impact on Kurdistan Region’s weather. Especially, in last couple of decades, the changes are more noticeable due to the global warming.

According to the local residents’ views, Chamrga dam and restoring the water led to all wells and water resources revived, as they were dried out completely. They acknowledged the benefits of the reservoir in the area.

The total budget for the project was 4 billion and 300 million from the Kurdistan Region Government’s fund. It was built with the local expertise and labor hand according to the universal standards. The hight of the dam is 17.5m, 262m long and more than 8m wide. It locates in Qushtapa district of Erbil province.

The Director General of Water Resources in the Kurdistan Region Karwan Sabah revealed to Kurdistan 24, the important role of this dam is not for its hight, but for its strategic location, it was a dried-out area. This lake will be useful for the animals, agriculture and the eco-system chain.

Suhad from Kurdawa which is one of the nearby villages, stated to Kurdistan 24 “With finishing that dam, our wells got refilled with water. Back to 2017, those wells were dried out, now we don’t have any issues. Before the wells in the farmer’s houses dried out, but now got refilled as a result of the Chamrga reservoir”
